Tyvek Suit

Tyvek Suit

I started my lateral thinking with coming up with a couple of possible themes and writing about them. My themes were The ocean, Nightmares, and the Vortex. Then I did mini thumbnails of my ideas. Once I had three that I thought were good I did mini Maquettes.

Final Maquettes

I decided to go with the theme nightmares. I chose this partly because I did a piece in 2D on the nightmares I get as a way to cope with them. I wanted to expand this idea but in a completely different visual way.

2D project

Once I had my final Maquette I started to gesture the design on the suit. I gestured the bigger areas first. Then I started on the centipedes. Once I had most of the big stuff down I began to color in with sharpie.

Work in Progress Part One

There were a couple of changes I made as I went. One was to get rid of the shadow person and the hand. I did this for style reasons and also because it didn’t look good in the sharpie. The second thing I changed was adding house centipedes and earwigs. I thought this would help add some different colors as well as add more yellow and red through the piece.

Work in Progress Part Two

The larger centipedes add a strong linear aspect That draws the viewers eyes around the suit. The other smaller bugs also create implied lines that moves the viewer’s eyes around the piece. The bugs also add a good sense of repetition throughout the piece. The fact that the bugs are all drawn the same way also mimics a pattern, even if it isn’t outrightly one. The red and yellow versus the black and brown make a nice unsettling contrast. The deep black of the holes versus the white negative space makes a good contrast too.
