Five Dynamic Chairs

Five Dynamic Chairs

The Hush Seating Pod

I was drawn to this chair mainly due to its color and texture. The softness of the fabric and the warm colors have a connotation of safety and home. The organic shape that is mostly round also has very non-threatening connections. While the shape is more round its not so round that it becomes boring, it still has a good sense of motion with the stitch looking implied lines and the opening that moves from the bottom of the piece to the top. Though the piece is very symmetrical and this is usually avoided in the elements of design, I believe it reinforces a sense of security and safety making it work well.

Outdoor Hanging Chairs

Hanging chairs, in general, tend to catch my eyes because of how ungrounded they are. I choose this particular style over others because they were a lot more open and larger than a normal chair. Also even in a still picture, you can almost see them rocking in the wind. I believe this is because of their shape and the angle the seat rests at implies motion. Also even though they are set up to be symmetrical in this image, the half-circle of thick metal adds such a weighted line to one side of the piece I believe it breaks up a bit of the symmetry.

Spikey Chair

This chair drew me in because of its juxtaposition. Chairs usually have connotations of comfort, you are supposed to want to sit on them. The fact that the bottom of the chair is spiked contradicts this idea of the chair. this piece is still functional, and may even be comfortable, but visually it looks uncomfortable because of the spikes. It also has a lot of negative space making it less grounded, and the shift in texture and space between the seat and the spikes makes it a little less symmetrical. The repeating of the spikes is also very successful.

Pink Chair

This chair is dynamic not particularly because of its shape but because of its use of color, physical texture, and repetition. The hot pink immediately grabs your eyes, and the repeated small round balls clustered together adds a sense of motion, as well as adding a very unique texture. The chair is more solid than others on this list but still is not grounded.

Yellow Chair

This chair also has good use of shape and color. The cone shape at an angle is not something usually seen in chair design. The bright yellow grabs your eye but is not overbearing. The layered cushions in a circular shape adds motion to the chair while also using repetition. The hole in the back makes it a more open form also making it more dynamic. It is very symmetrical, but I still enjoy it. The chair also does a good job of not being to grounded.
